New Horizons for Researchers and Innovators in Ukraine

Did you know that Ukraine’s association to Horizon Europe and Euratom programmes, in force as of 9 June 2022, is the key means of support to Ukraine’s Research & Innovation (R&I) ecosystem? Through Horizon Europe Association, Ukraine participates on par with other Member States in Horizon Europe for free.

To enable Ukrainian researchers and innovators to take full advantage the opportunities provided by associating to Horizon Europe,an important support measure has been the opening of the Horizon Europe office in Kyiv in December 2023. The aim is to boost research and innovation cooperation opportunities presented by Ukraine’s association to Horizon Europe and by specific support measures.

These are the opportunities under Horizon Europe, the EU’s key funding programme for research and innovation, for Ukraine:

Support to researchers and career opportunities

  • MSCA4Ukraine: € 25 million fellowships for displaced researchers of Ukraine in EU and Associated Countries under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions.
  • Research Infrastructures: fast-track access for researchers to EU research infrastructures.
  • ERC4Ukraine: over 500 vacancies linked to European Research Council grants available.

Collaborative research addressing global challenges

Boosting innovation

  • EIC4Ukraine: € 20 million financial support and advice from the European Innovation Council to deep tech start-ups.
  • EIT RIS Community Hub: help Ukrainian innovators find opportunities within the European Institute of Innovation & Technology community.
  • EIT Jumpstarter: help Ukrainian innovators and entrepreneurs build viable business models.
  • EIT HEI Initiative: extended to Ukrainian partners, to support higher education institutions to access the European Institute of Innovation & Technology innovation ecosystem and funds.

But there are other actions supporting Ukraine! These include the Hop On Facility, which allows Ukrainians to join ongoing Horizon projects’ that have no partners from widening countries, and the nuclear safety and security cooperation via the Joint Research Centre, a department of the European Commission which provides independent, evidence-based knowledge and science.
